    Evolutionary computing and particle filtering: a hardware-based motion estimation system

    Particle filters constitute themselves a highly powerful estimation tool, especially when dealing with non-linear non-Gaussian systems. However, traditional approaches present several limitations, which reduce significantly their performance. Evolutionary algorithms, and more specifically their optimization capabilities, may be used in order to overcome particle-filtering weaknesses. In this paper, a novel FPGA-based particle filter that takes advantage of evolutionary computation in order to estimate motion patterns is presented. The evolutionary algorithm, which has been included inside the resampling stage, mitigates the known sample impoverishment phenomenon, very common in particle-filtering systems. In addition, a hybrid mutation technique using two different mutation operators, each of them with a specific purpose, is proposed in order to enhance estimation results and make a more robust system. Moreover, implementing the proposed Evolutionary Particle Filter as a hardware accelerator has led to faster processing times than different software implementations of the same algorithm

    In the last recent years, with the popularity of image compression techniques, many architectures have been proposed. Those have been generally based on the Forward and Inverse Discrete Cosine Transform (FDCT, IDCT). Alternatively, compression schemes based on discrete "wavelets" transform (DWT), used, both, in JPEG2000 coding standard and in H264-SVC (Scalable Video Coding) standard, do not need to divide the image into non-overlapping blocks or macroblocks. This paper discusses the DLMT (Discrete Lopez-Moreno Transform) hardware implementation. It proposes a new scheme intermediate between the DCT and the DWT, comparing results of the most relevant proposed architectures for benchmarking. The DLMT can also be applied over a whole image, but this does not involve increasing computational complexity. FPGA implementation results show that the proposed DLMT has significant performance benefits and improvements comparing with the DCT and the DWT and consequently it is very suitable for implementation on WSN (Wireless Sensor Network) applications

The DLMT is computationally very similar to the DCT and uses quasi-sinusoidal functions, so the emergence of artifact blocks and their effects have a relative low importance. The use of quasi-sinusoidal functions has allowed achieving a multiresolution control quite close to that obtained by a DWT, but without increasing the computational complexity of the transformation. The DLMT can also be applied over a whole image, but this does not involve increasing computational complexity.     The emergence of new horizons in the field of travel assistant management leads to the development of cutting-edge systems focused on improving the existing ones. Moreover, new opportunities are being also presented since systems trend to be more reliable and autonomous. In this paper, a self-learning embedded system for object identification based on adaptive-cooperative dynamic approaches is presented for intelligent sensor’s infrastructures. The proposed system is able to detect and identify moving objects using a dynamic decision tree. Consequently, it combines machine learning algorithms and cooperative strategies in order to make the system more adaptive to changing environments. Therefore, the proposed system may be very useful for many applications like shadow tolls since several types of vehicles may be distinguished, parking optimization systems, improved traffic conditions systems, etc

    Cooperative Learning Model based on Multi-Agent Architecture for Embedded Intelligent Systems

    Cooperative systems are suitable for many types of applications and nowadays these system are vastly used to improve a previously defined system or to coordinate multiple devices working together. This paper provides an alternative to improve the reliability of a previous intelligent identification system. The proposed approach implements a cooperative model based on multi-agent architecture. This new system is composed of several radar-based systems which identify a detected object and transmit its own partial result by implementing several agents and by using a wireless network to transfer data. The proposed topology is a centralized architecture where the coordinator device is in charge of providing the final identification result depending on the group behavior. In order to find the final outcome, three different mechanisms are introduced. The simplest one is based on majority voting whereas the others use two different weighting voting procedures, both providing the system with learning capabilities. Using an appropriate network configuration, the success rate can be improved from the initial 80% up to more than 90%

    Approach to an FPGA embedded, autonomous object recognition system: run-time learning and adaptation

    Neural networks, widely used in pattern recognition, security applications and robot control have been chosen for the task of object recognition within this system. One of the main drawbacks of the implementation of traditional neural networks in reconfigurable hardware is the huge resource consuming demand. This is due not only to their intrinsic parallelism, but also to the traditional big networks designed. However, modern FPGA architectures are perfectly suited for this kind of massive parallel computational needs. Therefore, our proposal is the implementation of Tiny Neural Networks, TNN -self-coined term-, in reconfigurable architectures. One of most important features of TNNs is their learning ability. Therefore, what we show here is the attempt to rise the autonomy features of the system, triggering a new learning phase, at run-time, when necessary. In this way, autonomous adaptation of the system is achieved. The system performs shape identification by the interpretation of object singularities. This is achieved by interconnecting several specialized TNN that work cooperatively. In order to validate the research, the system has been implemented and configured as a perceptron-like TNN with backpropagation learning and applied to the recognition of shapes. Simulation results show that this architecture has significant performance benefit

    Neural networks are widely used in pattern recognition, security applications, and robot control. We propose a hardware architecture system using tiny neural networks (TNNs)specialized in image recognition. The generic TNN architecture allows for expandability by means of mapping several basic units(layers) and dynamic reconfiguration, depending on the application specific demands. One of the most important features of TNNs is their learning ability. Weight modification and architecture reconfiguration can be carried out at run-time. Our system performs objects identification by the interpretation of characteristics elements of their shapes. This is achieved by interconnecting several specialized TNNs. The results of several tests in different conditions are reported in this paper. The system accurately detects a test shape in most of the experiments performed. This paper also contains a detailed description of the system architecture and the processing steps. In order to validate the research, the system has been implemented and configured as a perceptron network with back-propagation learning, choosing as reference application the recognition of shapes. Simulation results show that this architecture has significant performance benefits

    Evolutionary design and optimization of Wavelet Transforms for image compression in embedded systems

    This paper describes the initial studies of an Evolution Strategy aimed at implementation on embedded systems for the evolution of Wavelet Transforms for image compression. Previous works in the literature have already been proved useful for this application, but they are highly computationally intensive. Therefore, the work described here, deals with the simplifications made to those algorithms to reduce their computing requirements. Several optimizations have been done in the evaluation phase and in the EA operators. The results presented show how the proposed algorithm cut outs still allow for good results to be achieved, while effectively reducing the computing requirements
